We drove through "historic" downtown Kissimmee one day last week and saw this strange monument. When I looked through some tourist literature I had picked up way back in Tallahassee, there it was. Kissimmee grew as it became the shipping point for cattle to Cuba and elsewhere. In the earl 1900s Kissimmee's mayor passed a law to allow cattle to graze in the streets and it became known as "cowtown." Who wold have thought?

But back to this strange looking thing. It's called the Monument of States, is forty feet high and was designed by a Dr. Bressler-Pettis. It is built from stones furnished by many people, including tourists and the President of the U.S. It has 1500 stones collected over 22 years and represents every state and 20 foreign countries. The Doctor's ashes are buried at the foot of the obelisk.
