This was a full tourist day. We made the 10 a.m. tour at CNN Headquarters in downtown Atlanta. Then walked to the Coca-Cola Museum. This was very similar to the Museum that used to be in Las Vegas. Most fun part was tasting the products that Coke sells in other parts of the world. I love the ginger drinks that are sold in Africa.
Then on to the State Capitol. We took the 2 p.m. with 3 other people. The Governor, Sonny Purdue, walked through the rotunda and the guide introduced us. The interior of the building is rather plain in comparison to many other capitols. The inside of the capitol dome is plain white. The exterior of the dome is covered with gold leaf from Georgia’s Lumpkin County which was the site of the nation’s first gold rush in 1828. Twenty years before California’s. The Senate and House of Representatives Chambers have been restored to their appearance when the building was built in 1889, with added technology improvements, of course. The General Assembly meets for 40 days each year starting in January.
One piece of art on the ground that got my attention was a sculpture entitled, “Expelled Because of Color.” In 1868 30 black representatives were elected. They were literally expelled from the General Assembly. This is 3 years after the Civil War.
We walked through the Atlanta Underground on our way back to our car at CNN. This is an area that once was part of the train yards and has been covered over and converted to shops.
Back home by 6 and ready to leave in the morning.
