From Asheville to Fort Jakson, South Carolina

We were lazy this morning and did not leave Asheville until 10 a.m. to drive about 120 miles southwest to Columbia, South Carolina, another state capitol. We’re trying to stay at Fort Jackson. Our military book says they have 15 sites, but they do not take reservations. John called as we were en route and was told they had one site left. The travel camp is on base, but you get to it off a country road, not through the security gates. When we got there, the sites were all taken and the office staff seems a bit disorganized. We decided to dry camp since someone may be leaving tomorrow. That costs $2.50 a night. We only have ¼ tank of gas, so can’t run the generator (or at least we hope that’s why it quit running suddenly.) If we can’t get a hook-up tomorrow, we’ll go to the gas station.
We drove on base just to look around and find where things are. The gate is 5 miles away and it is a large facility. We also found a place to get my haircut just off base and made an appointment for tomorrow afternoon. On the same road was a Lutheran Church and we got information about Sunday services.
