Today we drove 180 miles west to Northeast, Pennsylvania, just north of Erie, to have Toby’s foot (stabilizing jack) looked at. The Ford dealer is the RV repair place. John and I drove down to Erie for lunch while Toby was in the shop. We stopped at AAA and got some maps for New England and Canada. It was a beautiful day and we ate lunch outside at Smugglers’ Cove on the bay front. There is a bicentennial tower that was built in 1995 to celebrate Erie’s 200th birthday. Unfortunately, they don’t allow you to walk up the stairs and since John doesn’t do heights I didn’t take the elevator up.
Erie is the third largest city in Pennsylvania at 103,000. I find that amazing. It is Pennsylvania’s only port on the Great Lakes. In the War of 1812, ships built here under the command of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry were instrumental in defeating the British.
Toby has a return visit to the RV dealer scheduled for August 15 for foot surgery. We drove on to Camp Chautauqua, near the south end of Chautauqua Lake and 3 miles south of Chautauqua Institution. We have paid for a week's pass at the Institute starting Sunday, August 7th. That is Week 7 of the 9-week season and the subject is “Living an Ethical Life.” We don’t have any Internet access except in the office and it's pretty slow.
