Views of Chautauqua

Chautauqua's grounds are beautiful. The center of "town" is Bestor Plaza. During the day you'll find people sitting and reading, eating ice cream, playing frisbee, making music, using their computers, and just "hanging out". The center of the Plaza is a fountain and when it's warm kids love to go wading. The library anchors one end of the Plaza and the Colonnade anchors the other. The third side houses the bookstore, Post Office, and two restaurants.

Chautauqua Lake forms the eastern boundary of the grounds. The Miller Bell Tower, a marina, Boys and Girls Club, Sports Club, and beaches draw lots of people during the day. The Athenaeum Hotel, on the Register of Historic Places, and wonderful Victorian era homes, overlook the Lake.

I found this little pink Victorian tucked away on a quiet street. The sign on the gate says that Mary Lathbury, hymn writer, once lived here. She wrote "Day is Dying in the West" which is sung at the opening of every Sunday night Sacred Song Service, and "Break Thou the Bread of Life."

In short, Chautauqua is a wonderful fairy land to be in. A very cool summer camp for adults and kids.
