We had reservations for a 2:00 p.m. tour of the only Frank Lloyd Wright house open to the public in New Hampshire. It's in Manchester and was built for Dr. and Mrs. Zimmerman in 1950. They didn't want a traditional New England house and loved their 1,500 square foot Wright-designed home. It's typical Wright with furniture and fixtures he designed. He even designed the mailbox. It's very linear and built on squares. The back of the house is mostly glass. The rest of the interior is cypress wood. We weren't allowed to photograph inside the house unfortunately. Everything in the house, including pots, pans, books, and clothes, were left to the Currier Museum by the Zimmermans in 1988. It's 2 bedroom and 2 baths and I could live there, although it's too dark inside for John.
The Zimmermans' neighbor down the street loved their home and asked Mr. Wright to design one for him. It's for sale for $.2 million from the original owner who is in his 90s. the van driver took us by and it's not as appealing from the street, although it's 300 square feet larger. It's concrete block and one end is turned to the street so that's all you see. Our tour guide said the museum had been approached about 5 years to see if they were interested in buying it for $1 million. Unfortunately, it doesn't come with an endowment for maintenanjce so they turned it down. Anyone want to buy a Frank Lloyd Wright home in a very nice section of Manchester, New Hampshire?
