More Tours and Talks

We hadn't planned to do it, but after hearing the talks on Days One and Two, we thought we should hear the talk on Day Three. Tomorrow we have a private guide that will take us around the entire Battlefield, so let's complete the entire Battle today.

Before it started, we drove to our motel and checked into our room. The location is terrific, almost next door to the Visitor Center. Day Three's talk starts on the back patio of the old Cyclorama Building, across the parking lot from the Visitor Center so we walked over.

Day Three of the battle included Pickett's Charge, probably the most famous engagement of the entire Battle. When that was done, the North had won the Battle of Gettysburg and the tide of the war was changed in their favor. I don't think I ever realized how close the South came to winning the war in the first two years and it left me wondering what our country would be like today if they had. I'm sure there has been millions of words spoken and written about the subject, but it was a new thought to me.

The Ranger describing Day Three got kids involved in a display of how the cannon were fired. It was fun to watch.

We had also learned about the evening campfire Ranger talk at 8 p.m. so we added that to the agenda. It required a drive to the amphitheatre, going through town and around. The talk was a reading of excerpts from actual letters written to and from soldiers on both sides.

Home and to bed. Tomorrow is another full day.
