The Franklin Pierce Homestead is not in town and we came on it rather unexpectedly while driving along looking for the Hillsborough Villages. The home was built by his father, Benjamin Pierce, and Franklin grew up here in the early 1800s. He attended Bowdoin College in Maine, became a lawyer, then a politician at 24, being elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives. He was President from 1853 to 1857.
The Historical Society has restored the paint and stenciling in all the rooms. They have some of the original furnishings, and the tour guide was interesting. By her references to her father and his house we assumed she had grown up in the area. Turns out her husband retired from the Armed Forces and they moved here 11 years ago because her parents had moved here shortly before that. We talked about what we had been doing in Hillsborough that day and she said the German who owns the bakery had been in the American Army and retired the same time as her husband from the same base in Germany.
