Dessert at a Truck Stop

I saw an ad in some of the tourist literature we picked up for Dysart's Truck Stop's restaurant. "Home cooking tastes better when you don't have to cook it." I thought I had seen it mentioned in the Road Food book so we decided to stop there for dessert on the way home. They were advertising fresh fruit pies. The 60 acre truck stop is off I-95 in Herman, although they advertise as being in Bangor. When they started the business, the Dysarts' thought the best cook would be someone who had cooked for a logging camp and that's who they found. Today there are separate dining rooms for the truckers and the rest of us but all the food comes out of the same kitchen. It's obviously well known and the blueberry cobbler we had was quite tasty.

This is their 40th year of operation. When they started they were in the middle of nowhere. Not that they are in a bustling metropolis now. Augusta, 80 miles to the south has 40,000 residents and Bangor, 10 miles to the north, has another 40,000. But truckers are grateful for this wayside stop with all the conveniences they want.

When we got home I looked in my book and they're not there. But it was a good stop.
