We left Winthrop on our way to Bangor. Since we like cities and it's one of the few in Maine, we're off to explore. Map in lap, on back roads, we arrived at lunch time. Following the signs to downtown Bangor, we saw the large Paul Bunyan statue, one of the local things to see. It was erected as part of Bangor's 125th anniversary in 1959, because Bangor is supposedly the birthplace of Paul Bunyan. There's a time capsule in the base that is supposed to be opened as part of the 250th anniversary in 2084.
The Chamber of Commerce was next door so we went in to get a recommendation for lunch. We were directed to the Sea Dog Brewing Company on the banks of the Penobscot River downtown. I just looked at their website and found that they have won a prize at the 2007 San Diego County Fair for their Wild Blueberry Wheat Ale which is what I had with lunch. I love fruit beers and they also make an apricot that has won awards. Their spinach-strawberry salad was pretty good, too.
We spent a couple of hours driving around town, trying to find Lutheran churches listed in the tourist literature and missing Stanley. Bangor's population is 30,000 and still has industries in papermaking, timber, electronics, and shoes.
