Chicago Superdawg

Quiet day at home, but about 5 p.m. I picked up the Road Food book and we decided to drive into the city and have a hot dog at Superdawg. Quoting from the book, “Superdawg has been in the upper echelon of Chicago’s red-hot joints since 1948; and although it has recently remdeled, the old drive-in maintains tremendous kitsch appeal and still has genuine carhops and the “Suddenserver” automated order system. Its mascots, a pair of ten-foot tall statues of a male and female hot dog still stand atop the roof dressed in leopard-skin togas, flexing muscles and winking electrically like goofy airport beacons.”

Now with a description like that, how could you not go?

We decided not to eat in the car, so went inside and ordered at the window. They serve their meals in a cardboard box, complete with folding lid, that announces, “Your Superdawg lounges inside contentedly cushioned in Superfries, comfortably attired in mustard, relish, onion, pickle, and hot pepper.”

Unfortunately, I didn’t take a photo of this cultural icon, but you can see it at their website.
